Dubai is moving ahead with the AED 20.5 billion Dubai Metro Blue Line, one of the city’s biggest transport projects. The primary tunnelling works were launched in May 2026, marking a major step in expanding Dubai’s metro network. The new line will stretch 30 kilometres, including 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km above ground.
The project will have 14 stations and connect nine major districts, including areas around International City, Mirdif, Al Warqa and Dubai Academic City. It is expected to serve a population of around one million people under Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan.
A huge tunnel-boring machine called Al Wugeisha is being used for the underground construction. The machine is about 163 metres long and weighs more than 2,000 tonnes, with tunnelling operations working around the clock. Recent construction updates have also shown major progress around Dragon Mart and International City.
The Blue Line is currently progressing toward its planned completion, with the official opening targeted for September 9, 2029. Once operational, it will connect with Dubai’s existing Red and Green lines and is expected to make travel between several growing residential and commercial areas much easier.
