Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is being designed to offer passengers a largely queue-free travel experience, using artificial intelligence and biometric facial-scanning technology. The aim is to reduce or eliminate traditional waiting at check-in, immigration, security and other airport checkpoints.
The airport is part of Dubai’s massive US$35 billion expansion project, which is planned to eventually handle up to 260 million passengers a year. The development is expected to transform Dubai World Central into one of the world’s largest aviation hubs.
Instead of repeatedly showing passports and boarding passes, passengers will increasingly be identified through biometric facial recognition as they move through the airport. Dubai is already expanding similar smart-travel technologies at its existing airport, DXB, as part of its push toward faster and more seamless passenger processing.
The long-term vision is to make airport travel feel almost “invisible”, with technology handling identity checks and security in the background while passengers keep moving. The expanded Al Maktoum International Airport is planned to become a major global aviation hub as Dubai prepares for continued growth in international travel.
