Dubai, September 7, 2026: Dubai has officially launched a new airport immigration service called “Click & Travel,” designed to make passport-control procedures faster and more flexible for passengers travelling through Dubai’s airports.
The new service has been introduced by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai). Instead of requiring passengers to walk to a traditional immigration counter, trained passport-control officers can now come to the passenger inside the airport terminal and complete the required immigration procedure using a mobile device.
According to Dubai authorities, the system can complete the required procedure in approximately 12 to 15 seconds.
📱 How does “Click & Travel” actually work?
Traditionally, passengers arriving at an airport have to stand in a queue, reach an immigration counter, hand over or scan their passport, undergo identity verification and then wait for the immigration process to be completed.
Dubai’s new system changes this approach.
With Click & Travel, immigration officers use specially equipped mobile devices connected to GDRFA Dubai’s systems and databases. The devices use technologies including facial recognition, biometric verification and electronic passport reading to verify the passenger’s identity.
The important idea is that the service comes to the passenger instead of the passenger having to find the service counter.
For example, imagine Dubai International Airport is extremely busy and a large number of passengers are waiting around immigration. Instead of sending everyone toward fixed counters, officers can move through the terminal and process passengers using the mobile system.
This gives airport authorities more flexibility to manage crowds during particularly busy periods.
✈️ Why is Dubai introducing this?
Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s major international aviation hubs. Millions of passengers travel through Dubai every year, so managing passenger movement efficiently is extremely important.
During peak travel periods, immigration counters can become crowded. Dubai authorities say Click & Travel is particularly useful during high passenger volumes, operational pressure and emergencies.
The system is therefore not simply about replacing existing immigration counters. It is designed as an additional tool that authorities can activate when required.
Importantly, Click & Travel does not replace Dubai’s existing Smart Gates or Red Carpet system. Instead, it works alongside them as another option for managing passenger flow.
🤖 Dubai is already using advanced biometric immigration
This isn’t Dubai’s first major move toward automated immigration.
DXB already has Smart Gates, which use biometric technology to allow eligible travellers to pass through passport control quickly. Dubai Airports says eligible UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents and certain visa-on-arrival passengers with biometric passports can use Smart Gates.
Dubai has also developed the Red Carpet service, an AI-powered biometric corridor designed to allow eligible passengers to clear immigration extremely quickly.
So Click & Travel is effectively another step in the same direction: less queuing, more automation and greater use of biometric technology.
📊 More than 31,000 transactions during testing
The system wasn’t launched completely from scratch today.
Dubai authorities had already been testing Click & Travel before today’s official launch.
During its pilot operations between May and August 31, 2026, approximately 31,373 transactions were completed using the service. This gave authorities an opportunity to test how the technology performed in the real airport environment.
The first pilot phase actually began earlier, in October 2025, at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. A later phase expanded testing to different passenger categories and Dubai airport terminals.
After these trials, the service was officially launched on September 7, 2026.

One particularly interesting aspect is that airport authorities can use the mobile system strategically when passenger numbers become high.
Officials have said priority can be given to groups such as families, children and People of Determination when the service is deployed during busy periods.
At departure, the service is available to passengers including UAE citizens, residents and visitors. For arrivals, the initial phase covers UAE citizens and residents, with plans to gradually expand the service to additional categories.
This means travellers shouldn’t assume that every passenger will automatically be processed through Click & Travel. It is a flexible airport service that authorities can deploy depending on circumstances and eligibility.

🔐 Does this remove immigration checks?
No.
Click & Travel does not mean that immigration security checks are being removed. The system still verifies the traveller’s identity using biometric and passport information.
The difference is where and how the procedure happens.
Instead of:
Passenger → Queue → Immigration Counter → Officer
Dubai is moving toward:
Officer + Mobile Device → Passenger → Biometric Verification → Clearance
That is the major change.

A few years ago, travellers generally expected to show their passport to an officer at a physical counter. Today, Dubai already has automated gates, biometric verification and AI-powered immigration systems.
